About This Course

Dear student,

Welcome to the "Modeling and simulation in Engineering using Modelica" course!

The course is structured into a preface and four lessons. The work plan consists in a sequence of tasks, which include watching video lectures, reading selected parts of the course textbooks (cited as [1] and [2] hereafter), answering evaluation tests, and completing hands-on assignments.

After studying the lessons and completing the proposed activities, you will be able to:

  • Design model libraries applying the object-oriented modeling methodology.
  • Develop and use model libraries in Modelica.
  • Use Modelica modeling environments for editing, debugging and translating Modelica models, experimenting with the models and analyzing the simulation results.

The course content is based on the following two free textbooks:

[1]      A. Urquia; C. Martin-Villalba: "Modeling and simulation in Engineering using Modelica", Editorial UNED, 2018. Free e-book

[2]      A. Urquia; C. Martin-Villalba; M.A. Rubio; V. Sanz: "Simulation practice with Modelica", Editorial UNED, 2018. Free e-book

Requirements

The target audience is students interested in modeling and simulation, and with a background in both physics and numerical methods.

Assessment

In addition to watching the videos and reading some selected sections of the course textbooks, students are asked to answer four evaluation tests. The minimum passing score is 60% of correct answers.

Course Staff

The course teachers are professors in the Departamento de Informática y Automática, at the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) in Madrid, Spain; and members of the research group on Modelling & Simulation in Control Engineering of UNED.
